Description: Neuro-psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Amen is one of a handful of psychiatrists licensed in nuclear brain imaging, which shows how malfunctioning activity in the brain can cause such psychological problems as anxiety, depression, and addiction. SPECT imaging reveals the hot spots (overactivity) and cold spots (underactivity) within the five major parts of the brain, each of which oversees an aspect of thought, from planning and decision-making to emotions like fear and attraction. After first studying how particular parts of the brain may fail, Dr. Amen presents individualized "brain prescriptions" (cognitive exercises, behavioral modification, and sometimes medication) to help overcome the natural deficits that imaging reveals.

The five main brain structures are: LIMBIC SYSTEM (essential to bonding and mood control), BASAL GANGLIA (controls anxiety, panic, fearfulness, and conflict avoidance), PREFRONTAL CORTEX (the "supervisor" that governs organization and attention span), CINGULATE (helps you shift from thought to thought, option to option), and TEMPORAL LOBES (govern memory, language, and temper control).
